Yunpeng Cai’s Internship at ARM
Yunpeng Cai, a PhD student from the ARM-ECS Research Centre, has successfully completed a six-month internship at ARM Research, Cambridge.
His research is focussed on the design of building blocks for ultra-low power systems. He has developed innovative approaches to minimise flip-flop area and power – particularly applicable to larger designs like GPUs, which can be up to 30% flip-flops by area. His designs have featured in taped-out silicon on the Pipistrelle 4 test chip, and he will return to ARM Research in September to carry out testing after the fabricated chips are delivered.

Pipistrelle-4
Pipistrelle-4, taped-out at the end of May 2017, is the latest in a series of low-energy sensor-system chips. The chip includes circuit/system ideas from multiple PhD research students and industry, focusing on an energy and performance optimised SRAM bitcell, low-area overhead energy-efficient flip-flops and standard-cells. The chip was taped-out during Yunpeng Cai’s internship at Arm Cambridge, and includes circuits to validate his novel flip-flop design which has now been patented. The prototype chips were received at the end of September 2017, and tested successfully.
