Simon Craske Appointed as Centre Co-Director

The Centre is delighted to announce that, today, Simon Craske has been appointed as the new Co-Director (Arm) of the Arm-ECS Research Centre.

Simon is a Fellow and Lead Embedded Architect at Arm, and has nearly two decades working with the Arm architecture, developing features across the entirety of Armā€™s 32 and 64-bit processor portfolio. He is currently responsible for leading the evolution and maintenance of Armā€™s real-time and microcontroller profile embedded architectures. Simon is the holder of over fifty granted US patents spanning CPU architecture, verification and implementation, and brings a wealth of experience in technical leadership, design, and verification, of processor intellectual property, ranging from Armā€™s tiny Cortex-M0 processors, through to large SIMD engine implementations.

Professor Geoff Merrett, Technical Manager of the Research Centre, commented:

We welcome Simon to the Arm-ECS Research Centre, and back to the University of Southampton where he studied as an undergraduate student. We are delighted that he has agreed to take on this role, and he brings a significant wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise to the Centre – we look forward to working with him and benefiting from this over the coming years.

Simon replaces Dr David Flynn as Co-Director, who left Arm earlier this year after nearly 30 years of service. David was a co-founder of the Arm-ECS Research Centre, and has been instrumental in its success since it was created over a decade ago.

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Centre Co-Director (ECS), said:

David’s contribution to the Centre, right from the start, has been instrumental in our success. David’s technical expertise and high standing have helped many of the Centreā€™s researchers in achieving very impressive results and securing exciting jobs at Arm. I am grateful for David’s enthusiasm and for sharing my vision for the Center and for working together to deliver it.

The Centre would like to extend its significant thanks to David for his support, and look forward to continuing working with him in his role as Visiting Professor at the University.
