Prof Ian Williams

Professor

Prof. Ian Williams is internationally-recognised for research in the fields of environmental science and waste management. Ian has published extensively in books and peer-reviewed journals on topics involving waste electrical and electronic equipment. He has investigated the flows of electronic waste as well as the issue that much of the waste stream flows through informal and unregulated channels leading to global environmental, economic and health problems.

Working with the Arm ECS Research Centre, Ian and his team will be looking more deeply at the key processes of manufacturing for electronic devices, the impact on the world’s natural resources, carbon release, and the broader environment impact. The work is intended to help identify the “hot spots” in value chains that the UN Sustainability Goal 12 on Responsible Production and Consumption sees as key to making critical change in our industry.

Ian has received a number of awards for his activities and appeared numerous times on broadcast media highlighting the issues we face, and encouraging the changes in behaviour that are necessary.
